Welcome to
J.C. Developmental Editing
Where we strengthen your story before you publish!
If you've revised your manuscript but something still isn't clicking, the problem may be structural rather than sentence-level.
If your manuscript feels almost there but something isn't clicking, it's usually one of these:
Pacing that drags or rushes at the wrong moments
Characters acting inconsistently / Character arcs not landing
Tension that drops between major beats
Twists that fall flat
Scenes that are good individually, but don’t build momentum together
I'll provide clear, structured tools to strengthen your manuscript.
What you do with them is up to you.
What is Developmental Editing?
Developmental editing is a structural deep dive into your manuscript.I analyze how your plot progresses, how your characters evolve, and whether each scene meaningfully builds toward your ending. It's not about fixing grammar or polishing sentences.
It's about ensuring your story has:
Logical cause-and-effect progression
Character decisions that drive the plot
Escalating stakes and tension
Emotional payoffs that feel earned
A cohesive narrative arc from beginning to end
How Do You Work?
Throughout the manuscript
I conduct a full read-through of your manuscript, evaluating structure, pacing, character progression, tension, and emotional cohesion as I go.When I identify structural weaknesses, I provide inline comments that:
Explain the issue
Clarify why it matters
Ask targeted questions to spark ideas
Offer practical suggestions for revision
I also highlight moments that are working well, reinforcing strengths and identifying opportunities to elevate them further.
The Editorial Letter
After completing the manuscript review, you'll receive a comprehensive "Editorial Letter".
The letter includes analysis of:
Character arc progression and consistency
Worldbuilding cohesion and clarity
Plot structure and cause-and-effect flow
Strength of setups and narrative payoffs
Overall reader engagement and pacing impact
The length of the editorial letter varies depending on the overall length, complexity and structural needs of the manuscript.
Generally, you can expect an editorial letter to contain between 5-20+ pages. After reviewing the letter, you may book an optional consultation (up to 1 hour) to discuss questions.
This is included in the service when having purchased a full developmental edit.

Testimonials
"J.C. put in hours of diligent work to read my book thoroughly and provide instant feedback on pacing, character portrayal, story arc, and overall readability.
His skills truly shined as he provided real solutions to the problems that I could easily follow through with.I would highly recommend any writer who is working on a project to work with J.C. His feedback was incredibly useful in helping transform my book to a competitive manuscript."

Sample Inline Comments
Below are a few samples highlighting my feedback and context of the story.
Scene Discussion Sample
These "Scene discussions" focus on complex narrative moments that require deeper analysis than inline comments alone can provide.I identify what the scene appears to be trying to accomplish, where the execution weakens that intended effect, why it affects the reader experience, and possible ways to strengthen it.These "Scene discussions" are part of my Developmental Editing service and are not included in Manuscript Assessments.
About Me

Heya!
My name is Justin C., or J.C. for short.I look beyond sentence-level writing to evaluate how plot, pacing, and character decisions shape the overall reading experience.
I believe strong stories are built on clear cause-and-effect progression, meaningful character transformation, and earned narrative payoffs. My goal is to provide direct, structured feedback that gives authors a clear path forward.
My Critique Style
If you're looking for hollow praise, I'm probably not the editor for you.
But direct doesn't mean negative for the sake of being negative. I won't manufacture praise, and I won't manufacture problems. If something works, I'll tell you why. If it doesn't, I'll explain what is weakening it and give you practical paths forward.
Disclaimer
I specialize in fantasy and romantasy. I do not accept erotica or manuscripts where explicit sexual content is the primary focus.I primarily work with manuscripts between 70,000 and 100,000 words. If your manuscript falls outside these ranges, feel free to reach out. Depending on the project and length, I may still consider it.
